First round offers are just the first step in long process that all Universities and Tertiary institutions go through to sort out who can complete their courses. There are so many other options to get you where you want to be. Here are just a few of them
Second Round Offers
Remember that there is another round of offers that come out on the 4th of February. Whilst most new uni / TAFE students will receive their offers in the first round, there’s no harm in keeping your hopes high for a second round offer. Especially if your ATAR score was closed to the score required to get a first round offer.
Supplementary Offers
If you don’t receive the first or second round offer you’re after, make sure you have given permission to receive supplementary offers. Supplementary offers are offered by institutions after rounds 1 and 2 if there are still open spots for new students. You can see and change your permission to receive supplementary offers in your VTAC user account by selecting: Course Offers > Supplementary offer participation.
Alternate Pathways
A first round offer is just a direct entry into a University degree, however if you have your mind set on a specific course at a specific uni, don’t fret. An alternate pathway is when you study something closely related to where you want to end up. Didn’t get into the medicine course you wanted? Try studying science, crushing it, then changing to medicine further down the line.
Bridging Courses
Several institutions now offer courses and alternative pathways for students to enter their courses. For example the Diploma of Tertiary Studies at Monash University is designed as a transition program to get school leavers into the University through an alternative pathway. Several other University and TAFE institutions offers these such as Swinburne University, La Trobe University and Open Universities Australia.
Gap Year
So maybe after the offers were released today, you didn’t like any of them. Maybe you don’t even know what you like. Maybe, now that you think about it, you have no idea if you even want to keep studying at all! Take a gap year to think about it. You just finished year 12, it was hard, you deserve a break. Work a little, ponder what you want to do with your life and take a trip or two to see some of this beautiful planet.
Volunteer
If you are thinking about taking a gap year, maybe spend the time volunteering? There are a ton of organizations which would absolutely love some of your elbow grease. You might even want to take our volunteering overseas?
